Emotional Intelligence

There is a wide range of definitions of Emotional Intelligence, as well as a great deal of debate about whether it is actually a form of intelligence, or a skill or a behavioral disposition. There is also extensive debate about the validity of the measurement of Emotional Intelligence. As it is a relatively new area of research, it is constantly expanding and changing.

In very broad terms, the term "Emotional Intelligence" and its myriad of definitions is used to describe the way in which people understand, acknowledge and manage emotion, both their own and that of others. It is thought that those who can recognize their emotions and those of others, cope with those emotions, and manage them where necessary, are more socially adept or "emotionally intelligent" than others.

Whichever definition of Emotional Intelligence best encapsulates the elusive emotional competency it is supposed to be, there could be an advantage in any social or interactive environment, to be aware of the behavioral tendencies of yourself and others, as many behaviors may be driven by underlying emotional factors. The choice then remains as to whether to deal with those emotions or not to engage at an emotional level. However, having some visual snapshot of what behaviors may be prevalent would certainly provide a kind of map for navigating relationships without necessarily having to measure "emotional intelligence" itself.

Behavioral tendencies may be driven by various underlying and usually invisible factors including personality traits, intelligence, emotional maturity, environment etc. However, behavior is a visible manifestation of those factors, one which we can see and which affects our relationships every day.

The philosophy underpinning Management by Color is to self assess (and have others assess) our own behavioral tendencies, and to see how those mix with others with whom we associate. It provides a non-judgmental tool for visualizing and describing the array of behavioral tendencies within a group, and allows you the freedom to draw whatever conclusions you will on which combinations are harmonious, productive, conflict-ridden and mismatched, as well as which you will discourage and which you will strive to reproduce.
